Kristallnacht

IN NOVEMBER 1938, AN EVENT OCCURRED WHICH WAS CALLED
“KRISTALLNACHT” OR THE “NIGHT OF BROKEN GLASS”

In one night over
1,300 synagogues
in Germany, many
that had been there for centuries, were
burnt to the ground
or badly damaged;
30,000 Jews were
thrown into con-
centration camps;
7,000 Jewish busi-
nesses destroyed
and thousands of
Jewish homes were ransacked…

While the syna-
gogues burned,
German citizens
stood by, police
did nothing and
firemen turned
their backs.

In the
following months
the German
Jewish community
was fined 1 billion
Deutschmarks to
pay for the dam-
age done by the
Nazis.

To commemorate this
horrendous crime against
humanity, the NSW Council
of Christians and Jews will
hold its annual service to
mark the anniversary of
Kristallnacht (The Night of
Broken Glass) to be held in
the CBD amphitheatre of
Martin Place which is
situated between Pitt
and Castlereagh Streets
on November 9 at
12 noon.
During the service
three Sydney schoolgirls
will present extracts from
the diary of Anne Frank.
